The Department of Microbiology and Contagious Diseases with Clinics was
founded in 1921. It was formed out of two separate departments: Department of Contagious
Diseases and Department of Veterinary Hygiene and Microbiology. In the last 75 years, the
folowing laboratories have been opened at the Department: bacteriological lab, micological
lab, viral lab and 2 referal (national) laboratories: lab for leptospirosis and lab for
hoofed animals' infectious anemia (IAK), as well as the contagious diseases clinics. They
all make part of the Department and succesfully perform all sorts of activities. At the
Department there is also a large library. At Contagious Diseases' Clinics numerous indoor
and outdoor patients have been examined and a large number of laboratory examinations have
been performed. At the Department the following courses are being held: "Microbiology
and Immunology" in 2nd year of studies, "Contagious Diseases" in 8th and
9th semester and "Tropical Contagious Diseases" in 10th semester of
undergraduate studies. Postgraduate courses are also held and M.Sc. and doctoral
candidates are tutored.
