The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine team began the final field season of the LIFE WILD WOLF (LWW) project this April, aiming to capture and fit wolves with GPS collars in \u0160ibenik-Knin and Zadar counties to better understand the spatial and temporal movements of wolves near settlements and in areas with high levels of livestock damage. If successful, the information collected will help define more appropriate livestock husbandry practices and reduce existing conflicts. This work, conducted in partnership with the Croatian Hunting Association and county-level hunting associations in Dalmatia, with the support of local hunting clubs and Krka NP, seeks to understand the movements of wolves near settlements and in areas with significant livestock damage. If successful, the information collected will help define more appropriate livestock husbandry practices and reduce existing conflicts.<\/p>\n

Field activities include searching for signs of presence, such as scats, tracks, or scratch marks, analysing photos from camera traps, and communicating with locals regarding recent observations or damage. After these steps, traps equipped with alarms are placed on the ground. When triggered, the team immediately checks the trap to process the animal capture and releases it as soon as possible after fitting the collar and taking samples and measurements.<\/p>\n
