Here, we present the largest\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about DNA from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/neuroscience\/dna\">DNA<\/a>\u00a0time series for a non-human organism to date, including genome-scale data from 149 ancient\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about Animal from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/animal\">animals<\/a>\u00a0and 129 ancient genomes (\u22651-fold coverage), 87 of which are new. This extensive dataset\u00a0allows us to assess the modern legacy of past equestrian civilizations. We find that two extinct horse lineages existed during early\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about Domestication from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/immunology-and-microbiology\/domestication\">domestication<\/a>, one at the far western (Iberia) and the other at the far eastern range (Siberia) of Eurasia. None of these contributed significantly to modern diversity. We show that the influence of Persian-related horse lineages increased following the Islamic conquests in Europe and Asia. Multiple\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about Allele from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/allele\">alleles<\/a>associated with elite-racing, including at the MSTN \u201cspeed\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about Nested Gene from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/nested-gene\">gene<\/a>,\u201d only\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about Rose from ScienceDirect's AI-generated Topic Pages\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/rose\">rose<\/a>\u00a0in popularity within the last millennium.
