The Institute Of Animal Breeding And Livestock Production

In the Institute, several sculptures of animals are displayed by the sculptor Robert Frangeš-Mihanović (1872-1940), dermo-preparations of poultry and rabbits, osteological collections of skulls, collections of teeth of domestic animals, instruments and teaching aids, and the results of recent research conducted at the Institute.

Robert Frangeš Mihanović – Biography

Robert Frangeš Mihanović was born on 2nd October 1872 in Srijemska Mitrovica, and died on 12th January 1940 in Zagreb.  He completed his education at the trades and crafts school in Zagreb in 1889 and then continued his training in Vienna and Paris.  He is deemed to be one of the initiators and organizers of artistic life in Zagreb at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and, alongside Rudolf Valdec, the father of modern Croatian sculpture.  His best-known work is the statue of King Tomislav, 1928-38, set up in 1947 opposite the Main Railway Station in Zagreb.  In the Institute of Animal Breeding and Livestock Production there is a plaster bust of Hercules’ bull, a bronze cast of black Slavonian pigs and replicas of several plaster sculptures of horses.
