Jet again this year, the International Summer School of Aquaculture (Summer School in Aquaculture) was organized through collaborative efforts by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Sarajevo and Zagreb as part of the Central European Exchange Program for University Studies, CEEPUS within the VetNEST (Veterinary Network of European Student and Staff Transfer) network.

The summer school was held from July 16th to 23rd, and eleven students from the Veterinary Faculties of Sarajevo and Zagreb attended. Unfortunately, Veterinary students from Vienna had to cancel this year’s participation. Classes were held by Prof. Almedina Zuko, Ph.D. and Prof. Adnan Jažić, Ph.D., Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Sarajevo, and Prof. Alen Slavica, Ph.D., and Prof. Lidija Kozačinski, Ph.D. from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb. Classes (theoretical and practical, 46 hours) enable students to receive 3 ECTS points.

The theoretical part of the teaching took place at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sarajevo, and the practical classes took place on fish farms and processing factories of salmonid species at the Neretva River (Fish Farm „Eco-fish“, Grabovica, Fish Farm “Blagaj and Buna” and Fish Farm and Fish Processing Factory „Salmon“, Salakovac), the tour included Neum Fish Farms of the gilt poll and sea bass („Karaka“ and „Ancora“), and Fish Farms of mussels and oysters in Ston.

In the end, as every year, we thank all the collaborators for their warm welcome that were selflessly sharing their practical knowledge with the students in the beautiful surroundings along the rivers Neretva and Buna, and the sea sights of Neum and Pelješac making our teaching special. We also thank the students, curious, cheerful, real little connoisseurs, wonderful companions, just as one would expect from future veterinarians.

Prof. Lidija Kozačinski, Ph.D.
