The international sled dog race “Lekkarod”, a World Cup event and the largest stage race for sled dogs in Europe, was held from the 8th to the 21st of March, 2023 in the Savoy Alps in France. The sled dog race consisted of 7 stages of 40 km in 4 different locations along the Alps. Over 400 dogs participated in the stage races competing in different disciplines – skijoring (a winter sport in which a person on skis is pulled by a dog), a 6 dog sled race, and a 12 dog sled race.
Veterinary care is a crucial aspect in sled dog competitions, and we are very proud that our Assoc. Prof. Zoran Vrbanac, PhD., a specialist in veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation, was a member of the international veterinary team at Lekkarod 2023.
Twelve members of the veterinary team took care of a large number of dogs who intensely competed, a challenging endeavor and responsibility, but also a unique experience.
