University of Copenhagen offers a fully funded PhD fellowship in transmission of African Swine Fever.
The project will focus on the potential role of blood sucking insects in the spread of virus from infected wild boars to domestic pigs on farms.
The aim of the project is to describe the movement of bloodsucking insects in and out of swine herds and to quantify how these movements translate into risk of introduction of African swine fever to farms in Denmark and in other European countries. The project will be based on both experimental and observational entomological fieldwork in and around Danish swine herds as well as on entomological, virological and epidemiological field work on outbreak farms in two other European countries already affected by African swine fever .
The PhD project is part of a larger national research effort on African swine fever. An important part of the work will be done in close collaboration with virologists within the department and at the State Serum Institute. This part will aim at quantifying African swine fever virus in insects at actual outbreak locations and through transmission experiments in the laboratory.
