Beehive as a natural resource of antibiotic alternatives

29.11.2018.,

Project summary:
The antibiotic resistance has been recognized as the global health threat, but small efforts have been made to truly innovate the therapy of infectious diseases. A promising but constantly overlooked way to fight antibiotic resistance could be through the use of bioactive molecules from natural mixtures. One of the most potent mixtures used for centuries is propolis, a resinous substance produced by honeybees, a natural antiseptic and antibiotic which secures health for every bee in the beehive. Croatian propolis is collected from rural areas, from beekeepers that do not use pesticides. The aim of this project is to search for antimicrobial peptides and other novel bioactive molecules in this type of propolis. The whole concept of using native propolis as a resource of novel therapeutics, is based on sustainable, natural and organic principles of the health protection.
